The Sigaw ng Kabataan Coalition (SKC) and the Rotaract Club of Fort Bonifacio Global City have relaunched the Books and Toys for Mangyan Children (BTMC) with support from the Rotary Club of Fort Bonifacio Global City.

The BTMC is a literacy project that aims to increase the basic and functional literacy of Mangyan children. BTMC will hold its first outreach activity this May which will include games, story-telling, gift giving for Mangyan families and a feeding activity. The project intends to provide educational materials and supplies that will aid the children’s informal learning. The program will be facilitated by SKC leaders, Rotaract volunteers, and the tribal elders.  The group will also be conducting feasibility studies on constructing of community libraries and school extensions for ethnic minorities.

According to Rotaract Club of Fort Bonifacio Global City’s Deputy Director for Community Service Mae Palenzuela, the team’s prior exposure to the community made them realize the hindrances to Mangyan children’s access to education. The group is also asking for support through donations of children’s books, toys, school supplies for the successful conduct of the project’s activities.

Ellirie Aviles, founder of Sigaw ng Kabataan Coalition and president of the Rotaract Club of Fort Bonifacio Global City underscored the need for young people to be proactive in participating and engaging in projects such as BTMC. “We the youth should take control of our destiny by seizing the initiative to shape our future. For our voices to be amplified and heard, we must empower ourselves by organizing to equip ourselves with the right skills and knowledge.”  “As responsible citizens, we should take action in promoting accessible education for all. As Rotaractors, we take pride in serving humanity through this project.”

The Sigaw ng Kabataan Coalition is a national apolitical and independent coalition of youth leaders and their organizations dedicated to empowering children and the youth. The Rotaract Club of Fort Bonifacio Global City is a youth service organization sponsored by the Rotary Club of Fort Bonifacio Global City.
